Koshi Tappu

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve was established in 1993, and is located in Eastern Nepal. This reserve was launched to safeguard the enduring population of wild buffalo, but now is also an ideal place for bird watchers. This reserve is home to approximately 300 species of birds, and the major mammals found in Koshi Tappu are the Blue Bull, Wild Buffalo and the Gangetic Dolphin.

October through March is the best time to visit the reserve as many resident and migrant birds are in residence. Numerous Himalayan peaks including the world's fifth tallest mountain, Mount Makalu (8475 meters), can be viewed from Koshi Tappu. Rafting in the Koshi River is another popular activity.
